Biographical Information

Although he grew up in the Dominican Republic, Luis Ortiz attended college in the United States because his parents insisted that he receive a university education. He thus took part in a try-out for Dominican players looking to attend school in the United States, and received a full scholarship to go to Union University, in Jackson, TN. He was named to the school's athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.

He was a minor league hitting instructor for the Texas Rangers from 2008 to 2012 and for the San Diego Padres from 2015 to 2017 finishing that last season as the major league hitting coach in place of the fired Alan Zinter. In between, he was with the Cleveland Indians as assistant field coordinator and cultural development coordinator, In 2018, in an unusual arrangement, he was hired as assistant hitting coach of the Los Angeles Dodgers, sharing the position with Brant Brown concurrently with that of minor league hitting coordinator. The two were expected to rotate between the major league club and its minor league affiliates. He had known manager Dave Roberts from their days together in the Padres organization. In 2019, he returned to the Rangers as hitting coach under new manager Chris Woodward and stayed until the end of the 2021 season. In 2022, he joined the Boston Red Sox as an assistant hitting coach.
