The National League won the twenty-third midsummer classic at Griffith Stadium in Washington, DC on Tuesday, July 10, 1956 by a score of 7 to 3. The league's manager was Walter Alston.

In the World Series, the National League champion Brooklyn Dodgers were defeated by the American League's New York Yankees, 4 games to 3.
Award winners[edit]
The winner of the league's Most Valuable Player Award, given its Most Valuable Player, was Don Newcombe, a pitcher with the Brooklyn Dodgers. In the award's voting, he had 223 out of a possible 336 points and 8 first place votes.

The fifteenth annual Hall of Fame Game was played on July 23 at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, NY near the National Baseball Hall of Fame. In the game, the National League's New York Giants defeated the Detroit Tigers of the American League by a score of 11 to 10 in 12 innings.
