Biographical Information

Stan Landes pitched for the Granby Red Sox and the Sherbrooke Canadiens in the Border League (2-1, 6.75 between the two teams) and the Walden Hummingbirds in the North Atlantic League in 1946 (0-1). In 1947, he pitched for the Port Chester Clippers briefly.

Upon the advice of Bill Grieve, Landes became an umpire. Landes was an umpire in the North Atlantic League in 1948 through July, then in the Middle Atlantic League from July through 1949. He was in the South Atlantic League in 1950, military service in 1951 and the Sally again through August 1952. He worked the American Association from August 1952 through 1954 and the National League from 1955 to 1972. His first game was on April 13, 1955 and his final one on October 4, 1972. He umpired 2,838 games, not including two games in the 1970 NLCS, 21 World Series Games (1960, 1962 and 1968) and three All-Star Games (1957, 1961 and 1972).

Landes served in the U.S. Marine Corps during both World War II (four years) and the Korean War (1951). He married Janet Uibel on November 22, 1952. He was also a referee in the NBA, 1953-54, 1962 and 1968. He died at age 70 and is buried at Sun Land Memorial Park in Sun City, AZ.
