Biographical Information[edit]

Liam Sabiston has pitched for the Great Britain national team.

The Calgary native was 1-4 with a 5.79 ERA for Eastern New Mexico University in 2019. That year, he struck out 11 in 5 1/3 IP in the 2019 European Championship U23, losing to Germany when he allowed four runs to Germany. He was second in the event in Ks, 8 behind Paul Kirkpatrick. [1] He was 0-2 with a 13.14 ERA for Eastern New Mexico in 2020 before the season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. Returning in 2021, he was 0-1 with a 11.83 ERA and 2.19 WHIP. He allowed five runs in 4 1/3 IP against Italy in the 2021 European Championship U23. [2]

He made Britain's squad for the 2021 European Championship. He made three appearances; only Fred Mosier pitched more for the Brits. On the other hand, his 20.25 ERA was the team's highest, 6.04 more than Spencer Kreisberg. It was a tourney of wildly different results. In his opener, he relieved Alex Webb with two outs in the 5th, a 3-1 lead and one on against France. He walked José Paula then got Luis Delogu on a grounder. In the 6th, he struck out the side - former AA player Andy Paz, former indy leaguer Felix Brown and Bastien Dagneau. In the 7th, he again went 1-2-3, this time versus Daniel Patrice, Louis Brainville and Nolan Soliveres. By the time Mosier took over in the 8th, it was 7-1. Sabiston got the decision, a crucial win as it was what would put Britain into the top-8 pool for round two. He was not as sharp versus Israel. Relieving Johnny Fretheim with a 8-3 deficit in the 6th, he began by retiring Tal Erel. Ty Kelly doubled then he walked Robb Paller, Mitch Glasser and Ben Wanger to make it 9-3. A balk scored Paller before he recovered to strike out Jordan Petrushka and Assaf Lowengart. Christopher Messer succeeded him in the 7th. His last game is what really drove his ERA up. Relieving Greg Hendrix with a 8-2 lead, 2 outs and the bases loaded versus Belgium in the 7th, he walked Zion De Brauwer to force in a run then Benjamin Goffaux flew out. Britain scored 3 in the 8th so he had a 11-3 lead going into the bottom of the 8th. He started off well enough by getting Drew Janssen on a grounder but Axel Poesmans tripled, Robin Roevens singled in a run, Sam Boermans walked and Dennis De Quint singled to load the bases. Quentin Devreese, Matthew Joossens and De Brauwer all drew bases-loaded walks to make it 11-7. Mosier took over but allowed all three inherited runners to score, giving Sabiston 7 earned runs in 2/3 IP; Britain held on for a 12-11 win. [3]
