Biographical Information[edit]

Chris Messer has pitched for the British national team.

Messer was 1-1 with a 7.92 ERA for Florida SouthWestern in 2017-2018 [1] and 0-1 with a save and a 7.58 ERA for Lamar Community College the next year. [2] The Alberta, Canada native was 0-1 for Britain in the 2021 U-23 European Championship, walking nine and allowing seven runs in three innings. [3]

With Britain for the 2021 European Championship, he was much better. In his first outing, he relieved Fred Mosier in the 9th with a 7-2 lead over France and closed out Liam Sabiston's win. He went 1-2-3, striking out Paolo Brossier, Daniel Patrice and Louis Brainville. Against Israel, he replaced Sabiston in the 7th with a 10-3 deficit. He again had a 1-2-3 frame, getting Itai Goldner and Joey Wagman on grounders then fanning Tal Erel. Mosier relieved him in the 8th. His last game, he relieved Mosier in the bottom of the 8th with a 11-11 tie, the bases loaded and one out against Belgium, which had already scored eight runs that inning. The tall right-hander delivered in the clutch, striking out Robin Roevens and Sam Boermans to give him 6 K in 8 batters so far in those Euros. After Britain scored in the top of the 9th, he got the win by striking out the side (Dennis De Quint, Yves Poesmans and Matthew Joossens) as he had retired all 11 batters in the 2021 Euros, 9 of them by K! He easily had the best strikeout rate in the tournament. Only Dmitry Shtykher and Moisses Pargas pitched more innings without allowing a hit, 4 to his 3 2/3. [4]
