(Redirected from 1991 Cuban Serie Nacional)

The 1990-1991 season was the thirtieth season of Cuba's national baseball system.

Serie Nacional[edit]

Henequeneros wins their second consecutive championship in the thirtieth Serie Nacional. Once again the team was managed by Gerardo Junco. This season marks the introduction of a cross-bracket system in the playoffs.

In the playoff bracket, the top team in each division plays the runner-up of the other division, with the winners advancing to the best-of-seven championship. Both runner-ups, Henequeneros of Zona Occidental and Camagüey of Zona Oriental, win the best-of-three semifinals, against Santiago de Cuba and La Habana respectivly. The two teams advance to the finals, in which Henequeneros wins 4 to 1.

Henequeneros slugger Lázaro Junco wins his eighth home run title with 17. Industriales shortstop Germán Mesa steals the most bases with 22 swipes. Industriales pitcher René Arocha ties for the league lead in complete games with 9 - Lázaro de la Torre of Metropolitanos and Adiel Palma of Cienfuegos also have the same number of complete games. On July 4, 1992, a month prior to the Olympics, Arocha becomes the second Cuban national team player to defect to the United States since the Cuban revolution, following Barbaro Garbey.
