Matanzas (Series Selectivas)

Matanzas played frequently in the 20th Century Series Selectivas. They debuted in the league's first year, 1975, going 19-35, 2 games ahead of the last-place Industriales. Eduardo Terry managed to post the league's best record at 5-0 while Fernando Sánchez led the loop in both RBI (42) and hits (66, tied). Félix Isasi led with 14 steals.

In 1976, Matanzas was 18-36, again two games ahead of the Industriales for the cellar. Wilfredo Sánchez led in hits (66), triples (6) and steals (18). The team was 18-36 in 1977 to tie for last; Wilfredo Sánchez won the batting title (.381) and again led in hits with 85.

Matanzas went 24-36, next-to-last, in 1978. For the first time, they had no league leaders. The club was up to 27-33 and fourth place in 1979 with Wilfredo Sánchez leading with 81 hits and Rafael Rodríguez leading with 11 wins.

In 1980, the team was 27-33, 5th of 6 teams. Wilfredo Sánchez led in hits for the fourth time in five years at 88. Matanzas was 23-36, 5th again, in 1981. In 1982, the team had a record of 30-27, tying the Orientales for second, behind only Pinar del Río. Lázaro Junco led in homers (19) and RBI (45).

Falling to third in 1983, Matanzas stayed over .500 at 31-29 and boasted win leader Jorge Luis Valdés (11). In 1984, the outfit had a 24-21 record to again place third. They held steady for third and 24-21 in 1985 when Fernando Sánchez led the league in hits (60), doubles (12) and RBI (36).

In 1986, Matanzas was 27-36, down to sixth of eight teams. They were 27-36 again in 1987 and moved up to fifth. In neither year, did they have a league leader. They fell to 7th at 25-37 in 1988.

While the team had some bad years, 1989 marked a low point at 14-47 and dead last. They rebounded a bit to 24-37 and 6th place in 1990. During 1991, Matanzas went 35-28 to finish third. For the first time in five seasons, they had a league leader as Julio Fernández drove 19 doubles.

Matanzas was 28-34 and finished fifth in 1992. They vanished from the league when it restructured after that campaign.
