Francisco Despaigne pitched for 10 seasons in the Cuban Serie Nacional, going 46-37 with 39 saves and a 3.70 ERA in 293 games. He led the 1985-1986 Serie Nacional with 20 relief appearances for the Industriales. He made 23 relief appearances to lead the 1991 Series Selectivas. Despaigne's best season was 1991-1992 whe nhe led the Serie Nacional with a 0.92 ERA.

Despaigne's son Odrisamer Despaigne also pitched for the Industriales.

Despaigne later coached for the Metropolitanos. After his career in Cuba ended, Francisco managed for CB Sant Boi and CB Viladecans in the Spanish Division Honor. He also pitched briefly for Viladecans in 2009, giving up 5 runs (1 earned) in 4 1/3 IP at age 43.
