Biographical Information

Ludovico Coveri has pitched in San Marino, Italy, the Dominican Republic and Taiwan. He has pitched for the Italian national team.

In the 2012 U-15 Baseball World Cup, he had a 2.08 ERA as the Italian ace and fanned 10; he was 1 for 10 at the plate. He played in the Italian minors in 2013, going 3-1 with a save and a 2.19 ERA in Serie C and batting .361/.415/.389. He was 8th in ERA. In 2015, he was 3-2 with a 2.30 ERA in Serie B, walking only 9 in 54 2/3 IP. He was 2-0 with a 2.61 ERA for Italy when they won the 2015 European Junior Championship, finishing 6th in ERA and tied for 1st in wins. He attended the MLB European Elite Camp that summer. He had a 0-2, 7.20 record in the 2015 U-18 Baseball World Cup, tying for 2nd in losses, one behind Leonardo Oliveira.

Coveri made Italy's squad for the 2015 Premier 12. The 18-year-old was the youngest player in the event; Rob Cordemans of the Netherlands had played in the Olympics before Coveri was born. He made two appearances. Against Puerto Rico, he relieved Carlos Teran with a 6-0 deficit in the 7th, two out and two on. Luis Rivera hit into an error, but baserunner Omir Santos was caught in a run-down trying to score on the play. After Italy scored in the top of the 8th, Jorge Jiménez and Alexis Pantoja opened the bottom of the inning with singles. Jay González flew out. Coveri plunked Jack Lopez to load the bases but got Dickie Joe Thon on an infield fly. He walked Juan Silva to force in a run then Nick Morreale relieved and got out of the inning. His other game came against the Netherlands (where Cordemans got the won) when he relieved Yomel Rivera with a 15-1 deficit in the 7th. He served up a homer to Dashenko Ricardo but retired Gianfranco Wawoe, Randolph Oduber and former big leaguer Yurendell de Caster to end the inning; the game ended after 7 due to the mercy rule. He remained the youngest player in Premier 12 history after the 2019 Premier 12, as Geraldo Perdomo was the youngest there and had just turned 19.

Signing with T&A San Marino, he debuted in the Italian Baseball League in 2016, going 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA. He struggled in the 2016 European Champions Cup. His first outing was simple enough as he relieved Junior Oberto with two outs in the 8th and a 5-3 deficit and retired Fortitudo Bologna's Tyler LaTorre. His next game, he relieved Frailyn Florian in the 9th against Heidenheim Heideköpfe with a scoreless game in progress. He retired Philipp Howard and Philip Schulz but walked Jay Pecci, threw a wild pitch and gave up a run-scoring single to Sascha Lutz. Lutz stole second and he walked Simon Gühring intentionally. Filippo Crepaldi came in and allowed the inherited run to score, but San Marino rallied in the bottom of the 9th to get Coveri off the hook for the decision. The next game, he again ran into trouble. Facing Curacao Neptunus in the 10th after relieving Oberto, he hit Daniel Fernandes to advance the two runners on pace due to the Schiller Rule then walked Raily Legito to force in Urving Kemp; it was his 3rd walk versus three outs registered in the event. Crepaldi relieved, but this time Coveri took the loss. He had the team's highest ERA in the event.

He was signed by Philadelphia Phillies scout Claudio Scerrato in June 2016. He was 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 8 games for the DSL Phillies 1. He then was with the Italian team for the 2016 European Championship, allowing three runs in five innings (6 H, 0 BB, 4 K), including getting the start against Croatia (he would have had the win but left after four innings with a 17-3 lead, replacing by Crepaldi. He concluded a busy year by pitching for Team Europe in the Asia Winter Baseball League (based in Taiwan).

In 2017, he was 6-4 with 5 saves and a 1.51 ERA for the DSL Phillies Red, allowing only 10 walks in 53 2/3 innings. He just missed qualifying for the Dominican Summer League ERA lead (five of the qualifiers had lower marks) and he just missed the DSL top 10 with 24 pitching appearances (one shy). He led his team in wins and was second in saves. Despite that success, the Phillies released him at year's end. He really struggled with San Marino in 2018 (9 BB, 10 H, 9 R, 7 ER in 5 1/3 IP, 0-1). Despite that, he made the Azzurri squad for the 2018 Super6 but he was their only pitcher they did not use.

The Lugo native was somewhat better in the 2019 Serie A1 (2-0, 6.16; the Italian Baseball League had changed its name back to Serie A1) and still had control problems that had not plagued him in the minor leagues (13 BB in 19 IP). He allowed five hits and three runs in 1 2/3 IP in the semifinals. In the 2019 Italian Series, he only faced one batter as San Marino was swept by Bologna. He relieved René Mazzocchi in the bottom of the 9th of Game 2 with the bases loaded and two outs but walked Lorenzo Dobboletta on four pitches to tie it before Valerio Simone relieved and let in the losing run.
