Biographical Information[edit]

Geraldo Perdomo played for the Dominican national team before making his major league debut in 2021.

Perdomo was signed by Arizona Diamondbacks scouts Junior Noboa and Elvis Cruz in 2016. [1] He made his pro debut the next summer, hitting .238/.410/.285 with an impressive 60 walks (especially for someone 6' 3") in 63 games, while fielding .949 at short. He led the Dominican Summer League in walks, 4 ahead of Sherten Apostel. Despite playing in a short-season league, he was 4th in the Diamondbacks chain in walks, between Christian Walker and Anfernee Grier. Unlike many players who draw lots of walks because they are taking many pitches, he only struck out 37 times.

In 2018, Perdomo split time between the Hillsboro Hops (.301/.421/.456 in 30 G), AZL Diamondbacks (.314/.416/.442, 20 R in 21 G) and Missoula Osprey (.455/.586/.545, 7 BB in 6 G). He scored 43 runs in 57 games, had 5 triples, stole 24 bases in 30 tries and drew 39 walks. He was 5th in the chain in swipes. Baseball America named him the organization's #5 prospect, between Carson Kelly and Kristian Robinson. [2]

Geraldo slipped a bit in 2019 with the Kane County Cougars (.268/.394/.357 in 90 G) and Visalia Rawhide (.301/.407/.387 in 26 G). He fielded .967 at short, stole 26 bases (caught 13 times) and coaxed 70 walks, to 67 whiffs. He was 2nd in the chain in walks (5 behind Luis Alejandro Basabe) and tied for 4th in steals. He then played for the Dominican national team in the 2019 Premier 12. He was 3 for 9 with 4 walks, 3 runs and a RBI as a fine leadoff threat while playing error-free defense at short. Only Charlie Valerio had a better OBP for the Dominicans, who did not make the second round. Not bad for the event's youngest player, two months younger than teammate Jonathan Guzmán. He was not the youngest player in the history of the Premier 12 as Ludovico Coveri had been 18 years old in 2015. [3]

After being forced to sit out the 2020 season because of the Coronavirus pandemic, he made the Diamondbacks' major league roster at the start of the 2021 season and played his first game on April 3rd, as a defensive substitute at shortstop against the San Diego Padres. He appeared in just 11 games that first season, hitting .258, as he spent most of the year in AA with the Amarillo Sod Poodles, for whom he hit .231 in 82 games. He graduated full-time to Arizona in 2022, when he played 148 games as the team's regular shortstop, hitting just .195, with 5 homers and 40 RBIs. His OPS+ was 57, and while he was a good fielder, such weak hitting was not going to cut it in the majors for too long. However, he took a huge leap forward in 2023, as he made it to the All-Star Game after batting .271 in the first half. He slipped after that, with his average just .214 over the second half, with little power and few RBIs, but overall his production was acceptable with a .246 average in 144 games, 6 homers, 71 runs and 47 RBIs, with an OPS+ of 95. The Diamondbacks snuck into the postseason that year, then made a completely unexpected run to the World Series. He did pretty well during the four series which his team played, going 14 for 51 (.275) with 10 runs, 2 homers and 4 RBIs.

In 2024 he had his best season thus far with the bat, hitting .273 in 98 games, with 61 runs, 3 homers and 37 RBIs. His OPS+ was 101, so he was no longer forcing the D-Backs to take an offensive hit in order to put his glove in the line-up. He missed time due to a knee injury, but the team was convinced that the improvement with his bat was for real, as before the 2025 season, they signed him to a four-year extension taking him to 2029 after agreeing to a $2.55 million salary for the coming season. Counting that year, the deal was worth $57 million over the five years, with potential bonuses that could bring Gerardo a lot more money.
