Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Luis Alejandro Basabe is the twin brother of Luis Alexander Basabe. Both players were signed by Boston Red Sox scouts Eddie Romero and Luis Segovia before the 2013 season, when they were only 16. It was the second set of Twins the Red Sox has signed in a few years as they signed Xander Bogaerts and Jair Bogaerts together.
Luis Alejandro began his pro career in 2013 with the DSL Red Sox, hitting .192 in 58 games. The following season, he was back with the same team and hit .222 in 29 games. He played exclusively at second base both years. In 2015, he moved to the United States, lining up with the GCL Red Sox of the Gulf Coast League. In 28 games there, he hit .260/.387/.310 with 22 runs. He still had not developed any power, but his on-base skills were very good, which gave scouts a sense that he would develop into a solid offensive players after a few more years of seasoning. He started the 2016 season with the Greenville Drive of the South Atlantic League, where he soared to a .310 batting average in 64 games, in spite of having skipped a level and still being very young for the circuit. On July 9th, he was one of two prospects, along with Jose Almonte, to be sent to the Arizona Diamondbacks in return for veteran reliever Brad Ziegler. He finished the year with the Kane County Cougars of the Midwest League, where he hit only .217 in 45 games. Still his combined batting line read .272/.381/.408 in 109 games, and he had begun to show some power with 20 doubles, 6 triples and 7 homers.
In addition to his twin brother, he is a cousin of major leaguers Osleivis Basabe and Luis Matos and minor leaguer Olivier Basabe.
