Biographical Information[edit]
Luis Alexander Basabe is the twin brother of Luis Alejandro Basabe; he is an outfielder while his brother is an infielder. Both were signed by Boston Red Sox scouts Eddie Romero and Luis Segovia before the 2013 season (just as the Red Sox signed twins Xander Bogaerts and Jair Bogaerts at the same time) and began their professional career with the DSL Red Sox. Luis Alexander played 60 games that year, hitting .225/.385/.321. He was back with the same team at the start of 2014, getting into 40 games for the team before moving to the United States and playing another 32 games with the GCL Red Sox. Altogether, his batting line was .269/.376/.415, very good for a 17-year-old.
Luis Alexander spent the 2015 season with the Lowell Spinners of the New York-Penn League. In 56 games, he hit .243 with 8 doubles, 7 homers, 36 runs and 23 RBIs. He also drew 32 walks, giving him an OBP of .340. In 2016, spent most of the year with the Greenville Drive of the South Atlantic League, where he played 105 games. He also played 5 games with the Salem Red Sox of the Carolina League. His combined batting line was .264/.328/.452, as he hit 26 doubles and 12 homers. On December 6th, he was traded to the Chicago White Sox along with Yoan Moncada, Victor Diaz and Michael Kopech in return for pitching ace Chris Sale. The trade came a few months after his twin brother had been sent to the Arizona Diamondbacks in a separate deal.
He was named to the World team for the 2018 Futures Game. Hitting leadoff, he impressed by turning on a 102 mph fastball from Hunter Greene in the 3rd inning and blasting it for a two-run homer.
In addition to his twin brother, he is a cousin of major leaguers Osleivis Basabe and Luis Matos and of minor leaguer Olivier Basabe.
