Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Osleivis Basabe made his major league debut for the Tampa Bay Rays on August 13, 2023, playing shortstop and batting ninth against the Cleveland Guardians. He was taking the place of Wander Franco, who had been placed under investigation by Major League Baseball over social media postings the previous evening. He went 1 for 3 in the game, his first career hit being a double off Tanner Bibee in the 3rd inning, after which he came to score on a single by Yandy Díaz in a 9-2 loss.

He was originally signed by the Texas Rangers as an international amateur free agent on November 20, 2017 and was traded to the Rays on December 10, 2020 in the six-player deal that sent 1B Nathaniel Lowe from Tampa Bay to Texas. He is a cousin of twin brothers Luis Alexander Basabe and Luis Alejandro Basabe as well as Olivier Basabe and Luis Matos.
