Biographical Information[edit]
Tanner Bibee made his major league debut with the Cleveland Guardians one month into the 2023 season. He had been drafted by what were then the Cleveland Indians in the 5th round of the 2021 amateur draft out of Cal State-Fullerton and had raced through the minors, making it to the Show in less than two years. In his debut on April 26th, he went 5 2/3 innings in a start against the Colorado Rockies, allowing just one run while striking out eight batters and walking none. He received credit for Cleveland's 4-1 win that day, and it was a sign of things to come as he stayed in the starting rotation until mid-September, at which point the Guardians shut him down to limit his innings. In 25 games, all starts, he went 10-4 with a 2.98 ERA, with 141 strikeouts in 142 innings. He allowed just 122 hits and 45 walks, for an excellent WHIP of 1.176. He finished second in the voting for the 2023 American League Rookie of the Year Award, behind Gunnar Henderson, and was named to the 2023 MLB All-Rookie Team.
In 2024, he started where he had left off the year before, striking out 13 batters over 9 1/3 innings in his first two starts. His first outing on March 30th against the Oakland Athletics had been only so-so, as he lasted only 4 innings and gave up 3 runs, but on April 4th, the budding ace was on display as he struck out 9 Minnesota Twins batters over 5 1/3 innings, did not walk anyone, and allowed just one run to receive credit for a 4-2 win. He ended up making 31 starts and going 12-8, 3.47 with 187 strikeouts in 173 2/3 innings. The Guardians won a division title and he was their ace, leading the team in starts, innings, strikeouts and ERA, and finishing only one behind Ben Lively in wins. He started four times in the postseason, twice against the Detroit Tigers in the Division Series, and twice more against the New York Yankees in the ALCS. Manager Steven Vogt kept all of his starting pitchers on a short leash that fall, wanting to maximize the use of a dominant bullpen, so Tanner was limited to 15 2/3 innings over those four starts, but he posted a good ERA at 3.45 and a K/W ratio of 16-4.
Heading into the 2025 season, he signed a five-year contract extension on March 22nd, taking him through the 2029 season with an option for 2023. The deal was for a guaranteed of $48 million. He was designated as the team's Opening Day starter for the first time that season.
