Biographical Information

Jonathan de Marte has played in the independent leagues and for the Israeli national team.

De Marte was 6-1 with a 1.22 ERA as a high school senior and hit .492. He was New York Player of the Year by both Gatorade (2010, 2011) and Louisville Slugger (2010) and was Louisville Slugger All-American. He was redshirted as a college freshman but had a 5-1, 4.11 record in 2013. He had a 2-4, 9.97 record in 2014 before injuries ended his season. He then missed all of 2015 with another redshirt. He had four arm surgeries and a double hernia surgery during his time at Richmond. He returned in 2016 as a third baseman and hit .319, even though he hadn't been a position player for years. He was 3-4 with 4 saves and a 2.67 ERA in his sixth year at Richmond (he was now a master's student) and hit .294/.339/.431 with 47 RBI in 53 games. He tied for 7th in the Atlantic-10 Conference in RBI.

The right-hander turned pro with the Normal CornBelters, going 2-1 with a 5.53 ERA in 20 games. In 2018, he pitched for Normal (3-4, 7 Sv, 2.87) and the York Revolution (2 R in 5 IP). He obtained dual citizenship with Israel so he could play for Israel in their bid for the 2020 Olympics, as did a number of other players. He spent the summer of 2019 with York (9 R in 5 2/3 IP) and Les Capitales de Québec (3-2, 5 Sv, 2.23 in 35 G). He was 8th in the Canadian-American Association in saves.

He debuted for Israel in the 2019 B-Level European Championship, getting both of their wins against Russia as they won their pool. He relieved Shlomo Lipetz in the 9th with a 8-8 tie in the round-robin and went two innings (0 H, 2 BB, 4 R, 2 ER) in getting the win over Maksim Makarkin. In the finale, Russia squared off with Israel again. He replaced Dean Pelman with a 2-1 lead in the top of the 7th, two on and no outs. He allowed both inherited runners to score on a Viacheslav Vasiliev grounder and a Nikita Monakhov single. He went 1-2-3 in the 8th, retiring Cuban league veteran David Castillo, striking out Alexander Vasiliev and getting Cuban vet Yunior Valiente on a fly. After Israel scored three in the bottom of the 8th, de Marte got Geidys Soler on a liner and fanned both Denis Leonov and Viacheslav Vasiliev for the win. He tied Adam Panayotovich for the tournament lead in wins.

Israel moved on to the 2019 European Championship Playoff and de Marte did not pitch in the event as Israel beat Lithuania to go to their first European Championship. In the 2019 European Championship, he got the win over host Germany. He was 1-0 with no runs in 5 innings, striking out eight. Only Benjamin Wanger had more Ks for Israel.

As Israel finished in the top five in the 2019 Euros, they went to the 2019 Europe/Africa Olympic Qualifier. He pitched twice, facing the top two teams from the 2019 Euros (and the two teams in the event with the most Olympic appearances). Against the Netherlands, he relieved DJ Sharabi in the 9th with a 8-1 lead. He retired major league veteran Roger Bernadina and 2019 European Championship MVP Ademar Rifaela. Hendrik Clementina hit into an error by 3B Zach Penprase but de Marte got Kalian Sams swinging to end it. Versus host Italy, he improved to 4-0 on the season for Israel. He relieved ex-big leaguer Zack Weiss in the 7th with a 2-2 tie. He started off on a rough note as Alessandro Vaglio single and he hit Chris Colabello (who had to leave the game with a fractured nasal septum). Giuseppe Mazzanti grounded the runners over but de Marte fanned both Alberto Mineo and MLB veteran John Andreoli. In the 8th, Israel scored six runs, giving him plenty of cushion. He then breezed through the 8th with whiffs of Gavin Cecchini and Federico Celli and a fly out by Sebastiano Poma. In the 9th, he got Drew Maggi on a grounder and struck out Vaglio and Mattia Reginato to give him 6 K in 3 IP. He was one of three qualifiers in the event with a 0.00 RA (alongside teammate Wanger as well as Czechia's Petr Minařík) and tied Daniel Álvarez and Carlos Sierra for 6th in strikeouts.
