Team History[edit]
The El Paso Chihuahuas, of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League and briefly in Triple-A West, in 2014 ended a 10-year absence of baseball from the Sun City. The San Diego Padres farmhands play their games at Southwest University Park in El Paso.
The gap started when the St. Louis Cardinals bought and moved the El Paso Diablos to a one-year-old stadium in Springfield, MO, during the 2004-2005 off-season. It ended when the Tucson Padres moved to El Paso after the 2013 season. The name Chihuahuas was selected through a name-the-team contest, defeating finalists Aardvarks, Buckaroos, Desert Gators and Sun Dogs.
In only their third season, the Chihuahuas won the PCL championship. They faced the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in the 2016 Triple-A Baseball National Championship but lost, 3-1.
The Chihuahuas play Copa de la Diversión Hispanic engagement campaign games as Margaritas de El Paso (El Paso Daisies, which can also refer to the cocktail).
