Biographical Information[edit]

The Boston Red Sox drafted Mike McCarthy in the 14th round of the 2011 Amateur Draft from California State University, Bakersfield. McCarthy pitched in the Red Sox' organization from 2011 to 2016. He reached AAA for one game in each season from 2014-2016, but spent the bulk of his time at the AA level. Over six minor league seasons McCarthy fashioned a 28-27 record with 8 saves and a 4.57 ERA.

Following his playing career, McCarthy joined the Minnesota Twins organization in their player development system. He became a bullpen coach with the Rochester Red Wings in 2018-2019 and was scheduled to be a pitching coach with Rochester in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. McCarthy was pitching coach of the St. Paul Saints in 2021.

McCarthy moved to the San Diego Padres' organization as pitching coach of the El Paso Chihuahuas in 2022. In 2023, he was named bullpen coach of the Oakland Athletics, his first major league coaching assignment, but stayed only for one year. In 2024 McCarthy joined the Atlanta Braves player development system and served as the pitching coach for the Gwinnett Stripers.
