Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Scott Mitchell spent three years at AAA yet never made the majors. He later coached at AAA as well.

The Montréal Expos took Mitchell in the 22nd round of the 1995 amateur draft after he had gone 4-6 with two saves and a 2.87 ERA at Pacific. He had placed 4th in the Big West Conference in ERA his last year of college. He was 3-1 with a save and a 2.23 ERA in a fine pro debut with the Vermont Expos. Scott remained sharp in 1996 with the Delmarva Shorebirds at 5-6, 2.35 with a save and 76 strikeouts in 76 2/3 innings.

Continuing the climb up the chain, Mitchell spent 1997 with the West Palm Beach Expos (5-3, 3 Sv, 2.57) and Harrisburg Senators (1-0, 3.63). In 1998, the right-hander was 9-3 with two saves and a 3.80 ERA for the Senators. He helped Harrisburg become the second team to win three straight Eastern League titles.

Scott spent 1999 with both Harrisburg (2-0, 4.26) and the AAA Ottawa Lynx (4-4, 5.63). He also was 6 for 14 at the plate that year. In 2000, he was 5 for 16 with four walks and three doubles while going 6-5 with a 6.04 ERA for Ottawa. Mitchell wound up his playing career in 2001 with Ottawa (0-1, 4.12) and Harrisburg (1-2, 4.15). In 2000, he was used as a starting outfielder by Ottawa in a game in which they were short of available position players.

Overall, Mitchell was 36-25 with 7 saves and a 3.92 ERA in 190 games in the minor leagues, while hitting .254.

In 2003, he became a coach in the Florida Marlins chain, working with the Greensboro Grasshoppers (2003-2004), Carolina Mudcats (2005, 2007-2008), Albuquerque Isotopes (2006) and New Orleans Zephyrs (2009-2010) over the years.

Mitchell moved to the Pittsburgh Pirates' chain in 2011 as assistant pitching coordinator, staying though 2020. He was the pitching coach of the El Paso Chihuahuas in 2023-2024.
