Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Steve Mintz played professional baseball for a dozen seasons with cups of coffee in the majors in 1995 and 1999. He retired during the 2001 season and became a minor league instructor in the Anaheim Angels organization.

Mintz moved on to the Minnesota Twins organization the next year. He served as the pitching coach for the GCL Twins from 2002 through 2005, for the Beloit Snappers in 2006 and 2007, for the New Britain Rock Cats in 2008, and for the Fort Myers Miracle from 2009 through 2012.

After that, Mintz moved on to the Texas Rangers organization. He was pitching coach for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans for 2013 and 2014 and for the High Desert Mavericks in 2015. He then got his first U.S. managerial assignment, with the Hickory Crawdads in 2016. Mintz returned to coaching pitchers, with the Down East Wood Ducks in 2017 through 2019. He was scheduled to return to the Wood Ducks in 2020 but the season was cancelled due to Covid-19. He returned as Down East's pitching coach in 2021 and returned to the manager's seat with the Wood Ducks in 2022. After that season, the Rangers released him from their organization. He moved to the San Diego Padres' organization as bench coach of the El Paso Chihuahuas.

Mintz had pro ball managing experience before Hickory or Down East, though, piloting the Adelaide Bite in the Australian Baseball League's 2015-2016 season. When the ABL expanded into New Zealand in the 2018-2019 campaign, the Auckland Tuatara tapped Mintz to manage. He returned in 2019-2020 and would have managed the next two seasons had the pandemic not forced the Tuatara to sit them out. Auckland returned to the ABL in its 2022-2023 campaign with Mintz again at the helm. Less than three months after the season, however, the team announced its immediate liquidation.

Between the two ABL postings, Mintz managed three of his four teams into the playoffs.
