1992 Caribbean Series

From BR Bullpen

The 1992 Caribbean Series (Serie del Caribe) was the twenty-second edition of the second stage of the Caribbean Series. The series returned to Latin America after two failed attempts in Miami, FL in 1990 and 1991. It was held at Estadio Héctor Espino in Hermosillo, México from February 2 to February 9. The series featured four teams from Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. The Indios de Mayagüez of the Puerto Rican League won the series and were managed by Pat Kelly. The Most Valuable Player was Chad Kreuter, a catcher with the Indios de Mayagüez.

Over 15,000 came out regularly to help boost the finances after the pitiful turnouts in the United States the prior two years. The spectators saw a dramatic series with three of the four teams coming within a game of the title. Only the Leones del Escogido of the Dominican League were not competitive (1-5), even though they had five major leaguers. The Mayagüez team and the Águilas del Zulia of the Venezuelan League were tied at 4-2 at the end of the round-robin competition. In the finale, the Puerto Ricans pulled off an 8-0 romp on a three-hitter by Roberto Hernández and two relievers. Carlos Baerga hit a 2-run homer and Van Snider's 2-run single paced the offense.

In addition to Kreuter (.350, .950 SLG), other players on the Mayagüez club were Eric Fox (.300, .650 SLG, 6 R), Snider (.286, .571 SLG), Baerga, Hernandez (1.23), Orlando Lind (1-0, 0 R in 7 IP) and Hector Villanueva. Zulia's third-sacker Pedro Castellano hit .389 and scored 6 runs and were led by southpaw Wilson Alvarez (1-0, 1.80, 19 K, 7 H, 1 BB in 15 IP). The Águilas also got fine work from Eduardo Zambrano (.350), Carlos Quintana (.261), Eduardo Perez (.267) and Steve Cummings (1-0, 0.96).

Hermosillo's leading batters were José Luis Sandoval (.316), Al Martin (.250), and Jim Wilson (.348). Henry Rodriguez (.350, .550 SLG) was Escogido's best batter while Shawn Boskie was the team's best pitcher with a 1-0 record and a 0.00 ERA with 9 strikeouts in 7 innings pitched.
