1963 South American Championship
The 1963 South American Championship was the 4th South American Championship. It was held from January 5 to January 13, 1963 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Ecuador returned to the field after missing the prior Championship while defending champ Venezuela did not return.
Ecuador routed the field in its return to action, outscoring the opposition 56-4, with a 6-1 win over Peru their closest game. They had the top pitcher and top hitter, Raúl 'Látigo' Gutiérrez while Ricardo ‘Chico’ Rodríguez was named MVP and led with 3 home runs; both were Panamanians who obtained Ecuadorian citizenship. Reynaldo Ramírez Icaza was the manager, Medardo Haro a coach and the team consisted otherwise of P July Trottman, P Francisco ‘Panchón’ Sánchez, P William Luzuriaga, C Pedro Fuentes, C Ernesto Weisson, IF and OF Vicente Maldonado Vera, José Banchón, Manuel ‘Mikemo’ Pérez (the All-Star SS), Freddy Uzcátegui, Raúl Foyaín, Félix Avilés, Eloy Guerrero and Enrique Santos. Trottman, Sánchez, Fuentes and Pérez were also Panamanian natives.
Brazil was 3-1, with a 27-22 run differential. They had the All-Star C (Yossio Ito) and the All-Star 1B (Juzo Ouba). The team also consisted of Huguiyoski Sugeta, Samir Abujamra, Issami Iwasaki, Masahide Sakamo?? (Massahide Sakamoto?), Massayoshi Saito, Julio Toyonaga, Paulo Ojima, Jodo? Jun Odajima (Joao Odashima?), Massami Tanigaki, Eiji Nakata, Katsuji Sei, Sassaiti Nishiyama, Tadashi Funo, Pedro Sakaki, Mitsutoshi Sugeta, Toshio Sato and Mitsumasha Ogasawara. Takeshi Sugeta was the manager.
Peru won the Bronze at 2-2, like Brazil repeating their 1961 standing. They had All-Star 3B E. Morosimato and the All-Star OF J. Suga. They were outscored 29-22.
Argentina finished fourth at 1-3, outscored 34-39. They had one All-Star, 2B C. Sakata.
Chile was last at 0-4 and being outscored 56-11.
