1959 South American Championship
The 1959 South American Championship was the second South American Championship and saw an expansion from three teams to five as Venezuela and Ecuador joined the field. The event took place from February 7 to February 15, 1959 in Santiago de Chile.
Argentina and Brazil tied for the Gold Medal at 3-1, the only tie in the event (through 2016). Argentina beat Brazil 4-3 in their head-on match but lost 11-2 to Peru and edged Ecuador 10-9 and Chile 12-8. Brazil routed Chile 51-2 and topped Peru 12-4 and Ecuador 5-3. Brazil was managed by Gumpei Kikuchi and the roster consisted of Katsuji Sei (P), Julio Toyonaga (P), Tsutomu Arizono (P), Nishi Yama (P), Massahide Sakamoto (P), Marcilio Hayashi (C), Mitsuo Takao (C), Massakazu Tsunose (SS), Akira Wada (1B), Taketoshi Nishiyama (2B), Tsuyoshi Shimahara (2B), Samir Abujamra (3B), Issami Iwasaki (3B), Eiji Nakada (OF), Getulio Kooki Kataoke (OF), Hachiro Hayashi (OF) and Mario Tsunose (OF).
Peru got the Silver Medal. They lost 11-4 to Ecuador and beat Chile 21-12 in addition to the games mentioned above to finish 2-2.
Ecuador won the Bronze, beating Chile 29-3 in addition to the games already noted to be 2-2.
Chile finished last.
