1966 South American Championship
The 1966 South American Championship was held in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Host Ecuador defended their title, but would not win another South American Championship in the next 50 years. The finale took place December 1, 1966 at Estadio Aurelio Yeyo Úraga. Eloy Guerrero drove in Ramón Sotomayor with the winning run in the 9th for a 4-3 finale. Ecuador's other players were Ricardo ‘Chico’ Rodríguez, William Luzuriaga, José Banchón, Bonifacio Morán, Alfredo Portalanza, José de la Gasca, Olmedo Arroba, Raúl Martínez, Francisco Panchón Sánchez, Raúl Látigo Gutiérrez, Pedro Fuentes, Edmundo Viteri, Mikelmo Pérez, Félix Avilés, Pedro Murrieta, July Trottman, Eduardo Salcedo, Luis Calamaris and Francisco de la Torre. They were managed by Reinaldo Ramírez with coaches Francisco Coimbre and José Pichardo. Second-place Brazil's rosters included Yasuda, Toyonaga and Tsuji (surname unknown). Argentina, Chile and Peru were the other teams.
