Biographical Information[edit]
Pop Kelchner was a scout for the Philadelphia Athletics (1909-1911), St. Louis Browns (1912-1918) and St. Louis Cardinals (1919-1958).
He had a hand in signing such players as Sparky Adams, Charlie Berry, Pidge Browne, Jim Bucher, Ed Clough, Ripper Collins, Jake Daubert, John Davis, Shorty Dee, Eddie Delker, Paul Fittery, Jake Flowers, Jesse Fowler, Fred Frankhouse, Charlie Gelbert, Cliff Heathcote, Howie Krist, Lee Meadows, Joe Medwick, Ed Miller, Vince Molyneaux, Herbie Moran, Danny Murtaugh, Billy Myers, Joseph Myers, Lynn Myers, Curly Ogden, Norman Plitt, Ken Raffensberger, Tony Rensa, Jimmy Ring, Mike Ryba, Bob Shawkey, Bill Sherdel, Tod Sloan, Allen Sothoron, Max Surkont, Joe Ward, Ted Wilks, Chief Bender, Mike Balenti, Eddie Murphy, Willie Adams, Dick Kauffman, Les Bell, Hinkey Haines, Stan Musial and Tom Burgess.
Kelchner was a coach at Albright College and also taught French, Latin and Spanish there. He was business manager of the Reading Coal Barons in 1919 and took over the reins as manager on August 4.
