Biographical Information

Jared Elario has pitched in numerous events for the South African national team. In the 2005 Baseball World Cup, he tossed two hitless innings but walked five, hit three batters and gave up five runs.

During the 2006 World Baseball Classic, Elario was 0-1 with a 10.12 ERA. He relieved Tyrone Lamont with a 6-4 deficit against Team Canada in the 7th inning. He allowed a Pete LaForest double then drew two wild pitches to make it 7-4. Aaron Guiel walked and Adam Stern singled but Pete Orr hit into a double play to end further damage. In the 8th, Jared retired Stubby Clapp and fanned Jason Bay on a full count. He walked Justin Morneau, Matt Stairs and Corey Koskie to load the bases before Max St. Pierre grounded out. In the 9th, he gave up a triple to Ryan Radmanovich and a RBI double to Stern. Orr grounded back to Elario, who made a run-scoring error and was removed from the contest. He also pitched the final inning of the 17-0 loss to Team USA. He retired Derrek Lee. Chase Utley singled but Elario then got Michael Barrett on a fly and Randy Winn to ground into a force to end it.

Elario played in the 2006 World Junior Championship.

Jared had a 0-1, 8.10 record in the 2007 Baseball World Cup, allowing 11 hits and 5 walks in 6 2/3 innings. He gave up 6 runs in 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Mexican national team and 3 unearned runs in two innings of relief versus Panama.

Back with South Africa for the 2008 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament, he surrendered three runs on 6 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings in a no-decision against Germany. He got his second start against Australia but was roughed up. Paul Weichard doubled, Daniel Berg walked, Ben Risinger flew out, Glenn Williams singled in a run and Tom Brice singled in a run. Brice's hit was up the middle and injured Elario, knocking him from the game. Both runners later scored and he finished with a 11.81 ERA.

Elario was torched in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, giving up 4 runs in one inning; a 3-run homer by Adrián González was the big blow. In the 2009 Baseball World Cup, he relieved Shannon Ekermans with a 6-0 deficit in the 4th against Cuba. He allowed 4 hits, a walk and 3 runs in 1 1/3 IP before Dylan Unsworth relieved him.

In the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, he got into two games. He relieved Unsworth with a 1-0 deficit in the 7th against Israel and allowed one run. He fared worse replacing Kieran Lovegrove in the second of a 13-3 loss to Spain. For the event, he had 5 hits, 4 walks and 5 runs (3 earned) in two innings; only Lovegrove had a higher ERA for South Africa.

Jared also pitched twice in the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers. In the opener against New Zealand, he relieved Garth Cahill in the 9th with a 7-1 lead, the bases loaded and one out, and got Scott Campbell to hit into a game-ending double play. He also faced New Zealand in the semifinals, getting the start and going 4 1/3 innings (2 H, 5 BB, 3 K), giving up two runs, both on a Moko Moanaroa double, to get the win; Lloyd Stevens took over the pitching from him. Unsworth was the only other hurler to pick up a win for South Africa in the event.

The veteran starred in the 2019 Africa Cup Baseball Championship; getting the nod in the finale against Uganda, he threw a five-inning mercy rule no-hitter, allowing only one walk and one hit batsman while whiffing eight. It was not the first no-hitter of the event as Uganda's Bernard Adei and Nicholas Alumai had thrown one earlier. He tied Hamidou Kafando for 4th in the event in strikeouts and tied Robert Lewis-Walker for the lead in ERA.

In the 2019 Europe/Africa Olympic Qualifier, he started South Africa's opener against Spain and threw three shutout innings but got rocked for five runs in the 4th, including a grand slam by Blake Ochoa before Cahill relieved. He had control issues in his other start, versus Israel. In the 2nd, he walked Nick Rickles, hit Ty Kelly with one out and walked Benny Wanger; Cahill took over and all 3 runs scored. He led the tourney in losses, tied Alessandro Maestri and Bradley Erasmus for the most runs allowed (8) and tied Maestri for the most earned runs allowed.
