1966 Amateur Draft

(Redirected from January 1966 amateur draft)

The top selection of the 1966 Amateur Draft, Steve Chilcott, is one of only three first overall picks not to make the majors (Brien Taylor and Mark Appel are the others). The player chosen immediately after Chilcott was future Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson.

1966 was also the first year in which a January draft was held in addition to the regular June draft. The practice of holding two drafts per year would last until the 1986 Amateur Draft, after which it was discontinued.

In the 10th Round, the New York Yankees selected future NFL star Ken Stabler.
