Biographical Information

Al Santorini was a member of the expansion San Diego Padres in 1969 and went 9-24 in parts of three seasons with that hapless club before mercifully being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals during the 1971 season. Not so fortunate were Leron Lee and Fred Norman who went to the Padres in the deal. Santorini fared little better in St. Louis, going 8-13 over parts of three seasons before finishing up in 1973. He was picked form the Atlanta Braves with the Padres' fourth choice in the expansion draft, having earlier been a 1st round pick by the Braves in the 1966 amateur draft and making his debut with Atlanta late in the 1968 season.

On May 26, 1971, Santorini started both games of a doubleheader against the Houston Astros. He retired one batter in the opener, then turned over the game to lefty Dave Roberts to face a line-up loaded with seven left-handed batters. He made a regular start in the second game, pitching six solid innings. Manager Preston Gomez's ruse was for naught, however, as the weak-hitting Padres lost both ends of the doubleheader.
