Biographical Information[edit]

Third baseman Bob Jones was drafted 20th overall by the Minnesota Twins in the 1966 amateur draft. He spent four seasons in the minors, until 1969, never reaching AA, let alone the big leagues.

He hit .205/.319/.265 in 1966 for the GCL Twins, with four sacrifice flies to tie for the Gulf Coast League lead. He fielded only .856 at the hot corner, leading GCL third basemen in errors (18), putouts (35) and assists (72). In '67, the Georgian returned to the GCL Twins and showed good progress, batting .308/.394/.476 and fielding .908. His five home runs were two shy of the GCL lead and he won All-Star honors at 3B. Had he qualified, he would have been second in the circuit in average. He also led the league's third basemen in fielding percentage.

Moving up to the St. Cloud Rox in 1969, Jones produced at a .282/.335/.396 clip but fielded only .877. He led Northern League 3B in putouts (58), assists (134), errors (27) and double plays (10, tied). He also was 9th in the league in average and his 43 RBI tied Greg Luzinski for the lead. He ended his career in 1969 in the Houston Astros chain - they were picking up former first-rounders named Jones who would never make the majors, having also acquired Johnny Jones in the off-season. Bob hit only .224/.309/.320 for the Cocoa Astros, though he did field a career-best .930.

In total, Jones hit .254 with 12 home runs in 219 games.
