Biographical Information

Wayne Twitchell pitched a decade in the majors, winning 13 games and making the All-Star Game with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1973.

Twitchell was selected by the Houston Astros as the third overall pick of the 1966 amateur draft. After four years in the Houston organization, his contract was sold to the Milwaukee Brewers, and he made his big league debut with the club in 1970, appearing in a pair of games in September. Dealt by Milwaukee to the Philadelphia Phillies for Pat Skrable prior to the 1971 campaign, he spent most of that summer with the Eugene Emeralds of the Pacific Coast League before being recalled by the Phillies late in the season. In 6 outings for Philadelphia, he did not give up a single earned run, and he was in the majors for good by the next spring.

As a member of the Phillies rotation in 1973, Twitchell went 13-9 with a 2.50 ERA and was named to the National League All-Star team. He never could repeat his success, however, and was traded to the Montreal Expos during the 1977 season. He signed with the New York Mets prior to the 1979 season and was acquired by the Seattle Mariners later that year. After playing in just 4 games for the Mariners, he retired due to knee injuries. He finished his career with a 48-65 record.

After baseball, Twitchell returned to his hometown of Portland, Oregon, where he worked in real estate while coaching high school ball. He died of cancer in 2010 at age 62.
