Players who went here

The two towering stars of major league ball who went to Columbia University are Eddie Collins and Lou Gehrig. Hall of Famer John Ward attended Columbia Law School.

Moe Berg, who played at Princeton University, went to law school at Columbia. Ethan Allen, who went to college at the University of Cincinnati, earned a master's degree at Columbia. Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax, who attended the University of Cincinnati, took courses at Columbia his rookie season, in 1955 (but never actually played for the Lions). Bob Tufts, who went to Princeton University, got his MBA at Columbia.

Since World War II, only a handful of players from Columbia have made the major leagues: Gene Larkin, Frank Seminara, Fernando Perez and Mike Baxter.

Ex-big leaguer Andy Coakley was a long-time coach. He was hired to work with the pitchers in 1914, the year another ex-big leaguer, Billy Lush, was brought in as head coach. Coakley assumed the head coaching position the following year, and remained there (with a brief interruption in 1919) until 1951.
