[2] He was named the top left-handed pitcher in the 2005 China Baseball League, pitching for the Tianjin Lions. [3] He led the CBL in wins in 2008. [4]
In the 2008 Asia Series, he surprisingly pitched well enough to give China the lead over the Uni-President Lions but his bullpen could not hold on. [5] He was with China for the 2009 Asian Championship. [6] After winning titles with Tianjin in 2008, 2011 and 2016, he finally pitched for China in their fifth World Baseball Classic after being bypassed in their first four. [7] He was not only their most-used pitcher, appearing in three of their four games, but the old-timer (13 years older than their next-youngest pitcher, Kwon Ju; no one was in their 30s) had a 8.10 ERA, third (behind Qiang Lin and Yuchen Wang) on the 14-man staff. [8] In his first game, he relieved Hailong Sun in the 6th with two on, one out and a 3-1 deficit against tournament champion Japa. He got Masataka Yoshida to hit into a force then retired Kazuma Okamoto to escape the jam. In the 7th, he allowed a Shugo Maki homer but retired Sosuke Genda and Takuya Kai (K). Lars Nootbaar reached on a Jie Cao error but Su whiffed Kensuke Kondoh. Jian Yi relieved in the 8th and Japan would double their lead after Su left. His next outing came against Australia. Relieving Xin Qi in the third with a 4-0 deficit, two on and one out, he allowed a RBI single to Aaron Whitefield, retired Rixon Wingrove, walked Logan Wade and got Robbie Perkins on a fly. In the 5th, Ulrich Bojarski popped out and Tim Kennelly popped up. Weiyi Wang relieved and let the inherited runner score. His last outing of the WBC, the 41-year-old was the top hurler in a game where China served up a record 22 runs to South Korea in only five innings. Relieving Hao Zhang in the 5th with the bases loaded, one out and a 18-2 deficit, he served up a grand slam to Ha-seong Kim then Baek-ho Kang singled. He whiffed Kun-woo Park, walked Ji-hwan Oh and got Ji-young Lee on a grounder. Only Alan Carter had more innings or strikeouts for China in that event. [9]
Su's repertoire includes a fastball (peak 86.3 mph), forkball, curveball and slider. [10]
