He was signed by the Los Angeles Angels as an undrafted free agent. [4] He then appeared for the Chinese national team in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. He was the first Singapore native to play in a World Baseball Classic. In his debut, he relieved Chaoqun Zheng in the third with a 3-0 deficit, no on and two out against the Czech national team. He walked Petr Zýma then struck out Filip Smola. He went 1-2-3 in the fourth against another former Angels signee Vojtěch Menšík, former major leaguer Eric Sogard and Marek Chlup (whiffing Chlup). He had another 1-2-3 frame in the 5th against former AAA player Martin Červenka, Matěj Menšík and Martin Mužík. After China closed it to 3-1, he ran into trouble in the 6th. He walked Willie Escala, who advanced on a passed ball and a grounder then scored on Smola's hit. He struck out Vojtěch Menšík then Qiang Lin took over. His other game was not as good. He was charged with four runs in 1 1/3 IP in a start against South Korea; Zheng succeeded him and Carter took the loss to Tae-in Won. He led China in IP (4 1/3, one more than Changlong Su) and strikeouts (5, 2 more than anyone else) while his 8.31 ERA was 4th on their 14-man staff. [5]
