Biographical Information[edit]

Tae-in Won has pitched in the Korea Baseball Organization. His father Min-joo Won played semipro ball and his half-brother Tae-jin Won was drafted by a KBO team but didn't get into a game. [1]

He was the first-round pick of the Samsung Lions in the 2019 KBO draft. A regular member of the rotation as a teenager, he posted a 4-8, 4.82 mark in 2019. He went 6-10 with a 4.89 ERA in 2020, tying for 9th in the league in losses. He began 2021 much better (9-4, 2.59 as of early July) and made South Korea's team for the 2020 Olympics (played in 2021, delayed from 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but retaining the 2020 name). [2] He started against Israel and struck out the first four (Ian Kinsler, Ty Kelly, Danny Valencia, Blake Gailen). He went 3 innings, allowing four hits and two runs (both on a Kinsler homer), fanning five, before Won-joon Choi took over with a 2-2 tie. His next game was also versus Israel, relieving Sang-woo Cho with a 10-1 lead and two out in the 6th. He struck out Kelly; in the 7th, he allowed a Mitch Glasser single but struck out Zack Penprase and Scotty Burcham before Assaf Lowengart flew out. South Korea won with a mercy rule victory to end it after 7. He did not fare as well against Team USA. Relieving Woo-chan Cha in the 6th, one on, one out and a 2-1 deficit, he gave up hits to Jamie Westbrook and Mark Kolozsvary and walked Nick Allen to make it 3-1. Cho relieved and all the inherited runs scored. His last game was against the Dominican Republic, relieving Jin-uk Kim with a 10-6 deficit in the 9th, one on and no outs. He picked off Emilio Bonifacio, got Erick Mejia on a fly, allowed a double to Julio Rodríguez and whiffed Yefri Pérez. For the Olympics, he had a 8.44 ERA despite 9 K in 5 1/3 IP. He tied for 6th in the Games in pitching appearances and was 8th in K. [3]
