Biographical Information[edit]

Willie Escala has played in the indy leagues and been on the Czech national team.

Escala's father is Cuban and his mother is Czech. [1] He hit .377 as a high school sophomore, .400 as a junior and .354 with 17 steals as a senior. [2] Enrolling at the University of Miami, he hit .280/.373/.346 as a freshman. Changing climates, he batted .233/.303/.283 for the Anchorage Bucs of the Alaska Baseball League that summer.

As a sophomore, he produced at a .257/.350/.357 clip with 8 steals in 8 tries. He was 2 for 6 for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod League that summer. Transferring to Barry University, he was at .326/.442/.419 with 14 steals in 17 tries and 29 runs in 21 games when the season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. He slumped to .222/.327/.300 for Barry in 2021. He was then a graduate transfer at Miami of Ohio, now having played for both Miamis. He hit .275/.336/.401 with 18 steals in 23 tries.

After graduating, he signed with the Sussex County Miners and batted .215/.421/.292 with 23 walks in 25 games for them in 2022. Given his Czech roots, he was on the Czech roster for the 2023 World Baseball Classic. He was one of only three US-born players on the team, alongside Eric Sogard and Jeff Barto. [3]
