Bethune-Cookman University

Bethune-Cookman University was known as Bethune-Cookman College until 2007. It was originally founded in 1872 as the Cookman Institute, located in Jacksonville, FL, as the first post-secondary institution aimed at African-American students in the state of Florida. After a fire destroyed its campus and most of the city in 1901, it relocated to another campus, the in 1923 merged with the Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute of Daytona Beach, FL, which had been itself founded in 1904, to become Bethune-Cookman College. The school has sponsored baseball since at least 1969.
