Cleveland Indians[edit]

The Cleveland Indians advanced to the series by winning in their Divisional Series matchup against the Boston Red Sox, 3 games to none. The team was managed by Mike Hargrove. The Indians were playing in an American League Championship Series for the first time.

Seattle Mariners[edit]

The Seattle Mariners advanced to the series by winning in their Divisional Series matchup against the New York Yankees, 3 games to 2. The team was managed by Lou Piniella. The Mariners were also playing in an American League Championship Series for the first time.

Umpires[edit]

Crew chief Dave Phillips came down with the flu after Game 4 and had to be replaced, but a spare umpire was not available until Game 6.
