The Teams[edit]

Seattle Mariners[edit]

The Seattle Mariners advanced to the series by winning the American League West Division in a one-game playoff against the California Agels. It was the first postseason appearance in team history. The team was managed by Lou Piniella.

New York Yankees[edit]

The New York Yankees advanced to the series by winning the American League Wild Card. The team was managed by Buck Showalter.

Umpires[edit]

From 1995 to 2003, each league used two umpiring crews for its divisional series. The crews changed series at the change of venues (after Game 2).
