Biographical Information[edit]
Dave Phillips was an umpire in the Midwest League (1964-1965), Texas League (1966), and International League (1967-1970). He was then an American League umpire from 1971 to 1999. He lost his job late in 1999 as part of the failed mass resignation ploy concocted by his namesake Richie Phillips, who was the head of the Major League Umpires Association at the time, but he was rehired in 2001, this time as part of the consolidated major league staff. He umpired one final game on opening day in 2002, retired just shy of 4,000 career games. He was also a fixture in the postseason, first appearing in the 1974 ALCS and working a total of 13 series, including four World Series.
In his first season, 1971, he umpired a whopping 173 games in a 162-game season at a time when umpires never got a day off.
Dave's father Robert E. Phillips was a minor league umpire from 1946 to 1956.
