1989 Division II College World Series

From BR Bullpen

The 1989 Division II College World Series was held at Paterson Field in Montgomery, AL. The eight schools qualified by winning one of eight regional tournaments. The tournament was won by California State Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, coached by Steve McFarland. The runner-up was the University of New Haven. New Haven pitcher Steve DiBartolomeo was named the series Most Outstanding Player, the first MVP from a losing team. The series is notable for marking the return to the 8 team format last used during the 1979 Division II College World Series. It is also the only series to date to where the winner was later forced to forfeit their title. Cal Poly was found guilty of NCAA infractions and forfeited all post-season participation from 1989-1993.
