Biographical Information

Tyler Goeddel was a supplemental first-round draft pick in the 2011 amateur draft. His brother Erik Goeddel has played in the majors.

Goeddel hit .361 as a high school senior despite missing a month with mononucleosis. Baseball America rated him as the 89th-best prospect entering the 2011 draft, while he had a commitment to UCLA in case he did not sign. The Tampa Bay Rays took him 41st in the draft, with a choice that was compensation for the loss of Carl Crawford. He was the fifth first-rounder that year for Tampa Bay, following Taylor Guerrieri (also a compensation pick for Crawford), Mikie Mahtook, Jake Hager and Brandon Martin - Jeff Ames, Blake Snell, Grayson Garvin and James Harris would follow as Tampa Bay got 10 first-rounders that year. Goeddel signed for a $1,500,000 bonus; the signing scout was Brian Morrison.

Tyler made his debut with the 2012 Bowling Green Hot Rods on April 5th against the South Bend Silver Hawks. Hitting 9th and playing third base, he went 1 for 3 with two strikeouts. His first at-bat was against another 2011 first-rounder, Archie Bradley, who fanned him both times up.

He made his Major League debut with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2016. On May 14th, he made highlight reels with a tremendous throw from his left field position in a game against the Cincinnati Reds. With the Phillies leading 4-3 with one out in the 9th, the Reds had runners on second and third when pinch-hitter Jordan Pacheco hit a deep fly ball that looked destined to be a game-tying sacrifice fly; however, Goeddel went back to catch the ball, then unleashed a tremendous throw on the fly to catcher Cameron Rupp that arrived a split second before Eugenio Suarez, attempting to score from third, barreled into Rupp. In spite of recent rule changes to prevent home plate collisions, there was a huge one, but Rupp held on to the ball for a game-ending double play. He played 92 games in the majors, hitting .192 with 4 homers and 16 RBIs.

Goeddel spent the 2017 season in the Cincinnati Reds organization after being claimed off waivers, splitting his time between the AA Pensacola Blue Wahoos and AAA Louisville Bats. In 117 games, he hit .259 with 6 homers and 36 homers. In 2018, in the span of two days, Tyler and his brother Erik both joined the Los Angeles Dodgers; Tyler was signed as a free agent on May 17th and the following day, Erik was claimed off waivers from the Seattle Mariners. He was hitting .229 in 27 games for Louisville at the time, and was assigned to the AA Tulsa Drillers after the transaction.
