Biographical Information[edit]

Jeff Ames was a first-round pick in 2011.

Jeff was picked by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 46th round of the 2009 amateur draft and the Colorado Rockies in the 30th round of the 2010 amateur draft but didn't sign either time. He was 8-1 with a save, 2.05 ERA and 108 K in 88 innings as a sophomore at Lower Columbia College in 2011, while his fastball hit 100 mph.

Ames was taken 42nd overall in the 2011 amateur draft, by the Tampa Bay Rays; the choice was compensation for the loss of Grant Balfour. He was the 6th first-rounder that year for Tampa Bay, following Taylor Guerrieri, Mikie Mahtook, Jake Hager, Brandon Martin and Tyler Goeddel - Blake Snell, Grayson Garvin and James Harris would follow. Ames signed for a $650,000 bonus.

Assigned to the Princeton Rays, he did not have a welcome introduction to pro baseball. Facing the Bluefield Blue Jays, he allowed five hits and four runs in one inning before getting yanked; he took the loss.
