Biographical Information

Grayson Garvin was a first-round pick in the 2011 amateur draft.

High School

Garvin won a state title as a high school senior in 2008 and set school records for wins, ERA, strikeouts, innings and complete games. The Houston Astros took him in the 45th round of the 2008 amateur draft but the left-hander continued on to college.

College

Garvin was 0-1 with a 7.82 ERA as a freshman at Vanderbilt, with 8 walks and 18 strikeouts in 12 2/3 IP. He was better in the Cape Cod League that summer, posting a 3.86 ERA for the Falmouth Commodores and striking out 22 in 16 1/3 IP. As a sophomore, he had a 1-1, 1.25 record and one save, striking out 38 in 36 innings while cutting his walk rate (he gave out 10 free passes). He dazzled with the Bourne Braves in the 2010 Cape Cod League, going 5-0 with a 0.74 ERA, 18 hits and 37 K in 37 innings. He led the league in ERA and tied Andrew Gagnon for the most wins. Baseball America ranked him as the #28 prospect in the league.

His junior year, 2011, Garvin formed an excellent 1-2 punch on the Vanderbilt rotation with Sonny Gray (Taylor Hill was not far behind at #3). Grayson went 13-2 with a 2.48 ERA, 101 strikeouts and 25 walks in 112 2/3 innings. He was named the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Year and became the first hurler to go 10-0 in SEC play. The Tampa Bay Rays took him with the 59th pick of the 2011 amateur draft; it was a sandwich rounder that was compensation for the loss of Randy Choate. It was also Tampa Bay's 9th of 10 first-rounders that year, following Taylor Guerrieri, Mikie Mahtook, Jake Hager, Brandon Martin, Tyler Goeddel, Jeff Ames, Blake Snell and Kes Carter. Tampa Bay had done well with another recent Vanderbilt pitcher in the first round, David Price. The scout was James Bonnici. He signed for a $370,000 bonus.

Minors

Garvin made his pro debut with the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Opening Day, 2012. He had a rocky start, giving up 4 walks, 3 hits and 3 runs (2 earned) in only 3 innings and got a no-decision against the Fort Myers Miracle; George Jensen relieved and got the win.
