Southern Conference
The Southern Conference was formed on February 25, 1921 when fourteen institutions from the 30-member Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as the Southern Conference. By 1929, nine more schools had joined the conference. In December 1932, the Southeastern Conference was formed out of the 23-school Southern Conference, when 13 schools west and south of the Appalachian Mountains reorganized. The second major shift happened in 1953 when Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest officially withdrew from the league to form the Atlantic Coast Conference.
