Northeast Conference
The Northeast Conference (NEC) was founded in 1981 and known as the ECAC-Metro Conference until 1988. The original goal was simply to create a competitive Division I men’s basketball conference for unaffiliated schools on the Eastern seaboard. The league began sponsoring additional sports in 1985.
In 2023, the Mid-Eastern Conference ceased sponsoring baseball with only four schools remaining, and all four schools - Coppin State, Delaware State, Norfolk State, and Maryland-Eastern Shore moved to the Northeast Conference in baseball only.
