Biographical Information[edit]
The son of Gene Roof, infielder Shawn Roof made his professional debut in 2007.
Roof led his high school in batting average (in baseball) and field goal percentage (in basketball) each of his last three years. He went on to college at Illinois and hit .194/.280/.269. Shawn batted .320/.367/.359 as a sophomore. He spent the summer with the Fayetteville SwampDogs and hit .315, leading the team in average and making the Coastal Plain League All-Star team at second base. In 2006, the junior infielder hit .333/.423/.386 and stole 25 bases in 33 tries as the team's shortstop. He was third-team All-Big Ten Conference. He returned to Fayetteville that summer and set the CPL record for times hit by pitch. Returning for his senior year at Illinois, Roof batted .299/.399/.376 with 40 swipes in 48 tries. He set school single-season marks for steals and times hit by pitch (22) and set the career HBP record (45). He led the Big 10 Conference in steals and was 6th in NCAA Division I.
He was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 33rd round of the 2007 amateur draft. He is also the nephew of Phil Roof, Adrian Roof, David Roof, and Paul Roof, and the cousin of Eddie Haas and Lou Haas. He has two brothers who were also drafted, Jonathan Roof and Eric Roof. He split his first pro season between the GCL Tigers (.250/.423/.275 in 15 games) and the Lakeland Flying Tigers (.217/.266/.243 in 37 games).
Roof was a coach for the Delmarva Shorebirds in 2013 and Kane County Cougars in 2016. He also coached for the German national team in the 2014 European Championship. He became a manager with the Hillsboro Hops in 2017. He was scheduled to be manager for the Visalia Rawhide before the season was cancelled due to Covid-19. Roof was bench coach of the Reno Aces in 2024.
