Biographical Information[edit]

The son of Gene Roof, infielder Jonathan Roof was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 39th round of the 2007 amateur draft but chose to attend Michigan State University instead. He was later chosen by the Texas Rangers in the 8th round of the 2010 amateur draft. He made his pro debut that summer, splitting the year between the AZL Rangers and the Hickory Crawdads, hitting .266 in 44 games between the two clubs.

Roof was an assistant coach at Michigan State University in 2017 and University of Missouri in 2018 before joining his brother Eric's staff at Eastern Michigan University in 2019-2023. He then moved into coaching at the professional level as hitting coach of the FCL Pirates in 2024.

In addition to his father, Jonathan's brothers Shawn Roof and Eric Roof currently play in the minors. His uncle Phil Roof also played in the majors, and several other uncles played minor league ball.
