Biographical Information

Emilio Carrasquel made it to AA as a catcher then became a long-time scout and executive. He signed several future major leaguers. Emilio is the son of Martin Carrasquel, cousin of Manuel Carrasquel, Domingo Carrasquel Jr. and Cris Colón and nephew of Alex Carrasquel, Chico Carrasquel and Domingo Carrasquel Sr..

Emilio debuted in 1980 with the Bristol Tigers, hitting .298/.394/.455 with 14 doubles, 30 runs and 34 RBI in 58 games, leading the club in most offensive departments. He was 8 for 45 with two doubles that winter for the Leones del Caracas, backing up Bo Diaz. He split 1981 between the Lakeland Tigers (.257/.322/.316 in 54 G) and Birmingham Barons (.233/.353/.256 in 30 G), with no home runs in 273 at-bats after going deep five times in less playing time the prior year. He hit .255/?/.345 that winter, backing up Diaz again.

Carrasquel's summer woes continued in 1982, again split between Lakeland (.167/.218/.216 in 37 G) and Birmingham (.295/.377/.328 in 18 G). He hit .205 and slugged .274 in 1982-1983 for the Leones. Ending his minor league career in 1983, he was 4 for 30 with a double and 3 walks for Lakeland. Overall, he had batted .250/.334/.328 with 78 RBI, 77 runs, 81 walks and 30 doubles in 760 plate appearances over 208 minor league contests. He fielded .981 behind the plate.

He remained active in the Venezuelan League for five more winters as a player. In 1983-1984, he was 3 for 12 for the Cardenales de Lara, who had Tim Laudner as a starer. The next season, he was 5 for 27 for Caracas, backing up Rich Gedman in his final year for his hometown team. In 1984-1985, he hit .250/?/.286 as the backup for Toby Hernandez with Lara. He did not play in 1985-1986, then backed up Hernandez in 1986-1987 and went 5 for 28.

Emilio then had a long career in the front office and in scouting. He became an assistant GM for Lara in 1996 and started running the Seattle Mariners' Venezuelan Operations in 2001. He has also done extensive scouting for Seattle, signing Félix Hernández, Cesar Jimenez, Guillermo Quiroz, Oswaldo Navarro, Liarvis Breto, Asdrubal Cabrera, Luis Valbuena, Felipe Burin, Pedro Okuda, Jean Tome, Juan Fuentes, Luiz Gohara, Mario Martínez, Eduardo Miliani, Arturo Nieto, Gabriel Noriega, Felipe Talos, Jesús Ugueto, Ugueth Urbina Jr., Thyago Vieira and Gianfranco Wawoe.
