Biographical Information[edit]

Liarvis Breto has pitched in the minors and for the Venezuelan national team.

He was signed by Seattle Mariners scouts Emilio Carrasquel and Illich Salazar in February 2012. [1] He was 2-2 with 5 saves and a 2.03 ERA for the VSL Mariners that summer, allowing a .181 average and fanning 30 in 26 2/3 innings. He tied for 4th in the Venezuelan Summer League in saves. Moving to the rotation the next year, he was 5-3 with a 3.57 ERA for the same club. He was 10th in the VSL in ERA, tied for 5th in wins and was 9th with 50 K (between Ricardo Pinto and Kevin Gadea). [2]

Despite two solid seasons there, he was back in the VSL in 2014 and posted similar numbers (2-2, Sv, 3.50). He moved to the DSL Mariners 1 in '15 and went 5-1 with a save, a 3.21 ERA and 57 K to 7 BB in 56 IP. He had now had four solid seasons in a row but that was it for his time in the M's chain.

He was 0-1 with a 6.28 ERA for the independent Rockland Boulders in 2016. Making his Venezuelan Winter League debut, he gave up 3 runs (2 earned) in 1 2/3 IP for the Cardenales de Lara. He struggled with Rockland in 2017 (8 R in 5 1/3 IP). He was much better that winter as a LOOGY for the Caribes de Anzoátegui (2.81 ERA in 38 G, 16 IP). He led the LVBP in games pitched, one ahead of Loiger Padron. He then turned in 2 1/3 shutout innings in the 2018 Caribbean Series, retiring all seven batters he faced. He made three appearances, trailing only Wirfin Obispo and Robby Rowland for the Series.

In 2018, he returned to the affiliated ranks, doing well for the Detroit Tigers' Lakeland Flying Tigers (3-2, 2.61 in 10 G) and Erie SeaWolves (2-3, 3.82 in 9 G), fanning 73 in 61 2/3 innings. He was 0-1 for the 2018-2019 Caribes, working 10 innings over 27 games. He split 2019 between Lakeland (1-1, 2 Sv, 2.33 in 9 G), Erie (1-0, 3.38 in 7 G), the GCL Tigers West (4 Sv, 0 R in 8 2/3 IP) and West Michigan Whitecaps (5 ER in 6 IP), striking out 52 in 44 2/3 innings overall.

Breto then was with Venezuela for the 2019 Premier 12, making appearances in two of their three games. Against champion Japan, he relieved Andrés Sotillet with a 2-1 deficit, two outs and one on in the 5th. He retired Masataka Yoshida. In the 6th, Venezuela scored 3 to give him the lead. He allowed a double to Hideto Asamura then retired Yoshihiro Maru, before giving way to Carlos Navas. Venezuela failed to hold on to the lead, though, depriving Breto of the win. Versus pool host Taiwan, he took over for Henderson Alvarez in the 4th, two on and one out. He fanned Po-Jung Wang then Argenis Angulo relieved him. [3]
