Biographical Information

Jean Tome was a minor league pitcher. He has been both a pitcher and infielder-outfielder for the Brazilian national team.

Tome signed with the Seattle Mariners in April 2007; the scouts were Hide Sueyoshi and Emilio Carrasquel. He made his pro debut with the VSL Mariners, going 3-2 with a 3.42 ERA in '07. Coming to the US, he struck out 19 in 18 1/3 IP for the 2008 AZL Mariners while posting a 1-0, 5.89 record in eight outings. He ended his minor league career with the 2009 Pulaski Mariners, going 3-4 with a 5.18 ERA and fanning 54 in 48 2/3 innings. He was with the Brazilian national team for the 2011 South American Championship, leading the event in home runs as they won a Bronze Medal.

He was back with Brazil for the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, going 0 for 3 with two strikeouts. He did not play in the 2013 World Baseball Classic though he was on Brazil's roster. In the 2013 South American Championship, he relieved Rômulo Shindo in the 10th inning of the Gold Medal game and allowed two runs to Argentina to take the loss. He helped Brazil to a Silver Medal in the 2015 South American Championship, saving Shindo's semifinal win over Argentina to get revenge.

In the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, he started their opener against Pakistan and got the win with 5 1/3 shutout innings (3 H, 0 BB, 4 K); Eric Pardinho relieved him. The only pitcher with more innings and no runs allowed in any of the qualifiers for 2017 was Dylan Unsworth (8 IP). When Brazil won the 2016 South American Championship, he was both a reliever (3 H, 3 BB, 1 R in 2 1/3 IP) and bench player (0 for 4, 2 BB, 3 R) for the Gold Medal winners.

Jean was a two-way player in the 2018 South American Championship, posting a 6.75 ERA in two outings and hitting .214/.267/.571 with 5 runs and 7 RBI in 14 at-bats while splitting center field with Tiago Magalhães. He tied Eduardo Zurbriggen for 3rd in the event in RBI; only Felipe Burin drove in more for Brazil. His three-run homer (off Bolivia's Marco Davalos) tied him for the tourney lead in home runs. In the Gold Medal Game, he hit 6th but went 0 for 4 against Diego Echeverría; he moved to the mound in the 8th to replace Leonardo Oliveira with a 3-1 deficit and promptly gave up 4 insurance runs (3 earned) in the 9th, including a two-run homer to Eduardo Zurbriggen, before Keyne Kitayama took over.
