History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The 2024 Philadelphia Phillies entered the season coming off two straight postseason appearances, including reaching the World Series in 2022, but in both cases, this had come after poor starts to the regular season, necessitating some heavy paddling to set the ship straight on its course to the postseason. They were thus determined to avoid such histrionics this time by getting the season off on the right foot. What they did exceeded all of their expectations, as after 50 games on May 22nd their record of 36-14 was the best by any Phillies team in history at that point of the season. That also gave them three more wins than any other National League team, and a six-game lead on their nearest rivals in the NL East, the Atlanta Braves. The last major league team to have won 36 of its first 50 games were the 2001 Seattle Mariners, who would go on to win a record 116 games that season. With a win on May 23rd, they improved to 29-6 over their last 35 games, their best stretch of that many games since 1892! They finished May by notching their 40th win, 4-2, over the St. Louis Cardinals on May 31st, becoming the first team in the majors to reach the mark that season. At 20-7, May was also their first month with 20 or more wins since September of 2010.

One of the main heroes of the Phillies' great start was pitcher Ranger Suarez. After being named the NL Pitcher of the Month for April, he continued to dominate opponents in May, as after 10 starts on May 21st, his ERA stood at 1.36, trailing only two seasons by all-time great Grover Cleveland Alexander in the 1910s in team history; he was also 9-0 in those 10 starts.
